L3Harris Technologies Unveils Advanced Network Control System Enabling Advanced Airborne ISR/C2 Operations

Sep 11, 2019

LONDON (DSEI STAND S-7 310)

Highlights:

  • Provides alternative to legacy ISR system for the AH-64 Apache helicopter
  • Includes innovative ISR planning, monitoring and post-mission analysis and storage
  • Enables users to multi-task while bridging between C2 and ISR networks

L3Harris Technologies (NYSE:LHX) will showcase its new advanced Network Control System (NCS) – an ISR and C2 management tool for U.S. Army Aviation in conducting Manned-Unmanned Teaming operations – at the 2019 Defense & Security Equipment International expo September 10-13, 2019, at the ExCel London.

The exportable system provides full-motion video, telemetry and annotated map views of ground, airborne, maritime and mobile vehicles to the warfighter. It features a suite of tools for pre-mission ISR and communications planning, mission monitoring, and post-mission analysis and data storage. The system is designed to be the center of the planning, configuration, and command and control of the managed, multi-tier network.

The new L3Harris system manages communications between manned rotorcraft and unmanned air systems, mitigating for environmental conditions such as terrain blockage. It also provides data link reliability and data dissemination to front line and theater commanders. The system uses the L3Harris ROVER 6® data link, and integrates disparate radio and networking systems into a common application framework.

“As the number and complexity of airborne ISR operations increase, it is critical for planners to optimize mission performance by distributing a common operating picture of full-motion video and sensor data to command authorities,” said Dan Gelston, President, L3Harris Broadband Communications Systems. “NCS provides a solution for customers seeking an enhanced operating view and control of the battlespace.”

During recent Bold Quest exercises – a series of multi-national, coalition capability demonstrations sponsored by the U.S. DoD Joint Staff – NCS was used to manage and monitor battlefield situational awareness and video dissemination. NCS will be used to support ISR mission planning and teaming operations between U.S. Army Aviation AH-64 Apache helicopters and unmanned platforms, and L3Harris’ participation in the exercise further validated the future operational use of NCS in a joint environment.

“We successfully demonstrated multisite status, messaging and command and control for multiple active missions, which considerably bolstered mission effectiveness and execution for coalition forces,” said Troy Lundquist, L3Harris Special Operations Customer Relations Manager, who helped oversee the company’s participation in Bold Quest exercises in Europe and the U.S. “We’ve proven how NCS distributes and enhances situational awareness, as well as command and control for military networks.”
