New NFPA 1802 Standard Drives Improved Fireground Safety
Adopted in early 2021, NFPA 1802 defines new requirements for portable two-way radios and microphones deployed into hazardous zones. 1802 identifies operating environment parameters, as well as minimum requirements for the design, performance, testing and certification of portable communications devices. The new standard enhances performance and survivability of primary communication devices without compromising compatibility with field emergency services communications networks.

The NFPA 1802 standard applies to Emergency Services Personnel (i.e. firefighters) using RF devices and microphones in hazard zones, or areas where members might be exposed to a hazard or hazardous atmosphere; or a particular substance, device, event, circumstance or conditions presenting extreme dangers.
However, at this time, use of certified equipment may depend on the individual requirements and/or preferences determined by your department or state or local mandates.
When testing and certifying the radio and microphone together, the compliance label will be permanently attached on devices and accessories.
